Assignment Four

Assignment 4 is due by May 31. Do not send it in before the term starts; those early submissions will be deleted.

Remember that Assignment 4 is to be sent in after Assignments 1, 2, and 3 are sent in.

Send your homework to [email protected] using the following subject line: The Hobbit - Lesson 4 - your HOL name. For example, if I were to send in this assignment, the subject line would be, "The Hobbit - Lesson 4 - Prof. Tarma Amelia Black".

Do not send attachments; any email with attachments will be deleted.

Within the body of every assignment, at the top of the page, write your full HOL name and House.

Each lesson will have an assignment page where there will be a variety of opportunities for you to earn points. You may choose which you do; you can earn a maximum of 60 points per assignment.

Editor's note: Tarma stopped naming assignment options, so I took it upon myself to come up with suitable titles. I had some fun.

You say you want an evolution

10 points for at least 100 words

Of the species shown in the first two movies, some of which are mentioned in the lessons (hobbits, wargs, wizards, elves, goblins, dwarves, men, dragons), which of them are good, and which are bad? Choose four species and say whether they are good, bad, or a mix of good and bad. (You may also use other species that are in the movies, such as horses or rabbits, for this question.)

OR

Choose those same four species and explain why this is a question which is unanswerable in terms of good and bad. There are no wrong answers, just a matter of viewpoint.

Falling for Letters

Solve this Fallen Letters puzzle.

Impressions

20 points for at least 300 words

Time for Desolation of Smaug impressions. (You can read my An Unexpected Journey impressions here, if you need a refresher.) Don't worry about sentence construction. Please do keep the swear words (if any) to HOL standards (you may fill in with @#@# or something if you need to).

Tauriel

10 points for at least 100 words

Who is Tauriel? Tell me about her and whether or not she belongs in the story.

Thranduil

10 points for at least 100 words

In the movie Thranduil is shown quite differently from the book. Why do you think that Jackson reworked his character to be less compassionate and distinctly more cruel?

Extended Edition

10 points for at least 100 words

What do you want to say about the movie versus the book, or the movie alone, that hasn't been mentioned in either the lesson or the assignment? (There is so much to say, and I had to deliberately par the all the lessons down by more than half. (Editor's note: You could have gone further.) (Tarma's note in reply to the editor's note: You just wait until you see the homeworks if I show them to you, some people will have maybe 1,000 words for ONE answer.) (As-yet-unknown class member's response to Tarma's note in reply to the editor's note: Challenge accepted!)) This is your opportunity!
